Mecca: a journey of food and drink discovery

I’m a little apprehensive to tell you about this one, but since I’ve been waiting so long to visit, with many recommendations, I must. Just don’t tell everyone you know, will ya?

Small. Informal. Unsuspecting. Mecca Restaurant is located at 13 E. Martin Street, and despite the neon beamer out front promising mystery and intrigue, there wasn’t too much to say.

Until recently…

My friends and I visited the bar and mini restaurant last First Friday, after a deliciously served and tasting margarita at Dos Taquitos, where we had another fabulously served drink by a lady in black at Mecca.

After a couple hours hanging pool-table-and-fire-pit-side in the newly constructed (2004) Progress Energy building across the street, we headed downstairs to find more of our friends had made the journey to Mecca.

Multiple outdoor tables that we didn’t have to fight over (i.e. Raleigh Times) was enough to keep us going until they started packing it up right out from under us. Very politely and eloquently I might add. So, if you relate to a multi-dimentional gang that takes the motto “work hard. play hard.” right under it’s wing, or if you’d call yourself a raleigh warrior and enjoy the whils of acrobatic entertainers, this old spot (1930s) with new life (new hours, free wi-fi) may just suit your fancy.

P.S. Haven’t had the food yet, but word is breakfast is excellent, lunch is quintessentially downtown raleigh, and apps are now being offered late-night.
